If not for them; we would not be Sigma Phi Society as such

To the men of the Kappa Alpha, greetings and salutations!
The Sigma Phi Society salute and congratulate you on this occasion, celebrating the 200th anniversary of your fine order. Sigma Phi acknowledges the debt our Society owes to your founders - Hunter, Jackson, Hun, Meads, Constant and McGeoch - as they set out in 1825, marking the path upon which so many other college men have travelled. We wonder if they ever paused in their work establishing an order of friendship, “ enlivened with mirth and wit and merry song,” to consider the good and lasting impact their efforts would bring over the course of two centuries. Without doubt, the actions taken that cold November night in South College directly contributed to a like gathering not two years later, when Bowie, Witherspoon, Bowie and Cromwell lit the flame that the Sigma Phi holds dear. And for that, we thank you Kappa Alpha. One of Sig’s own, Brother Elihu Root, remarked at the 108th anniversary of our Society, that:
“No human institution lives long unless it meets a human need.”
Kappa Alpha, you have met that need admirably, and the men of the Sigma Phi Society wish you good fortune and Godspeed as you march fourth for the next 200 years!
Esto Perpetua,
Brendan J. McCurdy
Chairman, Sigma Phi Society
