After decades of silence, and as an early start to our bicentennial celebrations, Sigma Phi is proud to announce the release of its first new song in many years - Raise Your Glass. This fresh musical piece was written by Mark Patterson, I'74 - who still plays and sings in Short Notice®, a Sigma Phi band started at the Thorsen House when he was an active in Berkeley. The song was recorded, mixed, and mastered in Nashville, a city renowned for its rich musical heritage. What makes this release truly unique is the blend of Celtic music, Red Dirt Country, and Americana influences, that (with a bit of volume) gets your heart pumping.

The Significance of a New Sigma Phi Song
Sigma Phi has a long history of tradition and camaraderie, often expressed through music that resonates with its members. For decades, no new official song had been introduced, making this release a landmark event. The new song not only honors the fraternity’s life-long brotherhood and service to the country but also connects the listener to the Society's rich heritage. Mark Patterson brings decades of music experience and passion to the project. His songwriting reflects both his deep roots in Sigma Phi and his appreciation for musical genres that have shaped American culture.
The Nashville Connection: Crafting a Professional Sound
Choosing Nashville for the recording process was a deliberate decision. Known as "Music City," Nashville offers world-class studios and seasoned professionals who understand how to bring out the best in a song. The recording, mixing, and mastering were handled by experts who ensured the final product meets high industry standards. This professional approach guarantees that the song sounds polished and vibrant, ready for inclusion in our Signet songbook. The Nashville influence also adds authenticity, especially given the song’s Americana and Red Dirt Country elements.
Exploring the Musical Influences
Raise Your Glass stands out because of its unique blend of musical styles:
Celtic Music: This influence brings a melodic and rhythmic complexity, often featuring traditional instruments like the fiddle and tin whistle. The Celtic touch adds a timeless, almost ethereal quality to the song, enhanced by the use of bagpipes on the track.
Red Dirt Country: Originating from Oklahoma and Texas, Red Dirt Country is known for its raw, heartfelt storytelling and a blend of country, rock, and folk. This style adds grit and emotional depth.
Americana: Americana music combines elements of folk, country, blues, bluegrass and rock. It provides a broad, rootsy foundation that ties the other influences together.
Together, these genres create a rich tapestry of sound that is both fresh and familiar. The song’s arrangement carefully balances these elements, allowing each to shine without overpowering the others.
How to Listen
The song and lyrics are now available as a free download on Mark’s website, https://distinguishingmarksmusic.com/song/0 and can also be accessed through the official Sigma Phi website here. The Future of Sigma Phi Music
This new song marks the beginning of a potential revival in Sigma Phi’s musical tradition. With such a strong foundation, there is excitement about future projects that might explore other genres or feature collaborations with current members and alumni. Music has always been a powerful way to connect people, and this release demonstrates how Sigma Phi continues to evolve while honoring its past. You can reach Mark at map@dmarksmusic.com.
