And now for something completely different.

The Hobart Delta of Sigma Phi - More good news!

Dear brothers : - The Fall Semester has begun and there are 26 brothers and 4 new sophomore pledges affiliated with the house.  Our Sigma Phi Place is home to 13 brothers this semester and a minimum of 17 will be living there in the Spring Semester.  The house can hold a maximum of 19.  As you know, we have entered into a one year lease with HWS that expires on June 30, 2025.  During this period, HWS is reimbursing us, dollar for dollar, for the room charges it charged the brothers who live in the house.  The Fall reimbursement was slightly over $56,000.  The Spring reimbursement should be greater with more brothers living in the house.  From these reimbursed moneys, we pay all the operating expenses of the house – including taxes and mortgage principal and interest payments.

The current on-campus brothers anticipate 10 new freshmen pledges in the Spring.  With 40 brothers, Sigma Phi will be the largest fraternity at Hobart.  But that’s just the beginning of good things.  The average GPA of the present 26 brothers is 3.2 and 50% of them are varsity athletes.  This is a wonderful group of brothers that we can all be proud of.  They care mightily about the house and are taking great care of it.  This past weekend celebrated the arrival of parents on the campus.  The brothers hosted approximately 200 parents, brothers, and students throughout their very successful party, complete with a big band, on Saturday evening.  All were impressed with the condition of the house.

You’ll be interested to learn that the actives of the Delta are hosting a program on October 22, 2024 that is open to all students, faculty, and staff of the Colleges.  The speaker is Ed Hajim who will be discussing his most recent book, “The Four Ps,” that is a template for young people to plan for a life, not just a living.  The Four Ps are: Passions, Principles, Partners, and Plans.  This program is co-sponsored by the Colleges’ Salisbury Center – its placement office.  Ed’s story is one of rags to riches.  He was orphaned as a youth and ultimately rose to become the CEO of Furman Selz and the chairmanship of many public and private boards.  He is a graduate of the University of Rochester where he served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for 12 years and donated the largest single gift of $30 million to found the Hajim College of Engineering.  Ed also holds an MBA from Harvard.  Jack Meagher, President of the Delta (and a member of the varsity ski team) will be the host of the program and interview Ed.

Last week was the Annual Convention of Sigma Phi on the campus of Union College.  Attending on behalf of the Delta were 5 active brothers including Jack, its President.  Chris Jones, President of the Delta, G’79, and myself, G’62, attended on behalf of our alumni.  You will be pleased to know that the Delta has been selected to host the Annual Convention next year – penciled in to be held September 25-28.  Hopefully, you will plan to attend.  These are wonderful events and, as I have learned, the brotherhood of Sigma Phi is composed of very accomplished individuals.  There is also a lot to learn about the wonderful things the Sigma Phi Society is doing on campuses across the country.

Importantly, you should know that the Delta still has a loan outstanding with the National that is just over $10,000.  To incentivize us to pay this off, the National will apply all of the annual national dues of $75 paid by Delta alums against the principal and interest (at 5%) of this loan.  Accordingly, when you receive notice of the national annual dues of $75, please pay them.  If everyone pays them, the loan will be paid off in just one year.  PLEASE.

Lastly, if you would like to have your name on the bronze plaque memorializing the recent restoration and renovation of the house and haven’t contributed $1,000 or more to qualify, please make your contribution by the end by November 30, 2024.  This will be the cut-off date.  Contributions continue to be needed to complete the remaining needs of this undertaking.  Contributions can be made and mailed to:

There is a lot going on at the Delta and within the Sigma Phi Society.  I am more proud than ever to be a part of it.  I hope you share my sentiments because you have been a big part of making good things happen.

All the best.
