From Marshall C. Solem F’79 -Member of the Viele Selection Committee
The Viele scholarship application for the 2024-25 academic year is now available through the Sig website. Awards can be up to (and possibly exceed) $5,000 and can be applied toward the costs associated with a Sig brother's full-time undergraduate or graduate education for the 2024-25 academic year. Minor adjustments to the process and recommendations for success in this year's application cycle are noted below:
Applications are due April 15th, 2024
As in the past, a recommendation from a professor, employer, etc. is required. Please do not wait until the last minute to ask people for these recommendations. Ask them now so they have time to write a good recommendation for you!
To substantiate financial need, applicants now have the option to submit either their FAFSA Student Aid Report OR the College Scholarship Service Financial Profile (as in the past).
Make sure your essay and recommendation are ORIGNAL.
Essays and recommendations will be screened for evidence that significant portions of them were written by AI/GPT tools. Essays found to have a high probability of significant portions being written by such tools will be viewed negatively by the selection committee.
If you are a repeat applicant, do not recycle prior essays or recommendations. This is checked for and negatively impacts the selection committee’s evaluation of an application.
Due to the nature of the Viele application process, it is highly recommended that you get an early start on your application. Given the time allowed to complete the application, requests for extensions of the application deadline will not be granted.
Having someone (e.g., an alumni board member) review and suggest edits to your essay is encouraged. Such an approach has been shown to enhance applicants’ success compared to essays written the day before the deadline that received no third-party review.
